She diedin her room, and before she died, she would regularly hear lowwhistling and low metallic clanging noises at around three in themorning. Miss Julia Stoner died in her own room, where there was nochance of anybody getting in because her door was locked from theinside every night and the windows were crammed by old fashionshutters with broad press bars.We learn that the windows were tightly shut, like an old-fashionedhouse, like a prison, outrighthere to escape. This prepares us by tellingus that no one could get thr ough and through by the windows. This adds to the glory of that there is fear and a need of protection.The walls were completely solid. The flooring of Miss Julia Stonersroom was also solid, with no bound doors or openings. The chimney, alsobeing wide in size, but was barred by four large staples. So it wasusual that she died the way she did, because it is obvious now that nowas in her room when she died.And the reason why Miss Helen Stoner worries for her life is thatHelen is experiencing the same circumstances of which her sister, MissJulia Stoner, experienced before her death.
